What Do Lions Do? Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need, wherever need exists. The Lions’ motto is “We Serve.” In 1925 Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their annual International Convention, challenging them to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against blindness.” Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association’s most significant activities. That crusade has resulted in the establishment of Sight First, a global sight loss prevention program. In more than 60 years Lions have been recognized throughout the world for their service to the blind and visually impaired. A majority of the world’s eye banks are established and supported by the Lions, as are hundreds of clinics, hospitals and eye research centers. In their local communities, Lions provide thousands each year with free quality eye care, eyeglasses and optical aids. They also recycle eyeglasses and hearing aids and support research for diabetes and diabetic eye disease. Who are Lions? • People of any race, color, creed, or occupation. All are welcomed. • A group dedicated to community improvement and personal development through service to community projects and serving the less fortunate. • A stimulus to community spirit. • The world’s largest service organization with over 1.4 million members who help meet the challenge of difficult community projects. • Recognized by government and business leaders at every level as an organization which develops new community leaders through constructive action. |
